Introducing the Welmar A4 upright piano c.1987

One of the last truly British piano makers, Welmar pianos were manufactured in Clapham, London by Whelpdale Maxwell & Codd from c.1925 until the company closed in c.2003. Whelpdale Maxwell & Codd was historically the UK distributor for Bluthner pianos, with a long standing partnership stretching back to before the First World War, and many Bluthner characteristics and features found their way into the design of Welmar pianos, including a beautifully warm and sonorous tone and blue felt accents. A particular favourite among discerning pianists and music teachers, Welmar pianos were robust and dependable instruments which were crafted from top quality components. Numerous models were produced in a variety of cabinet sizes, with the most popular models being the compact A series.

Our Welmar Model A4 modern style upright was produced in c.1987 and has been privately owned from new, recently arriving at Chamberlain Pianos in part exchange. Standing at 109cm tall and in a beautiful mahogany wood veneer cabinet with brass fittings, the A4 is a great alternative to a modern Yamaha or Kawai which largely come only in polished black, and also benefits from the modern features one would expect, including a full length 88 note keyboard and a practice pedal.

Where it trumps the modern Yamaha b1 is with its solid spruce soundboard and double felted hammers, and consequently it produces a much warmer and richer tone. The piano has been meticulously prepared by our workshop technicians including French polishing and a thorough technical service, and is in superb condition throughout. Highly recommended for the teacher and discerning amateur pianist, the Welmar A4 upright piano c.1987 is now on display and ready for selection.
