Acoustic Resonance Enhancement (A.R.E.)

Drawing inspiration from antique orchestral string instruments, which produce a rich and mellow tone that has matured and developed over a long period of time, Yamaha's technicians have developed a technique to enable the wood selected for SX series grand piano rims to produce the same rich tonal properties as a beloved vintage instrument.

Soundboard

In creating the SX Series, Yamaha borrowed techniques used in the flagship CFX for attaching the soundboard, ribs, and bridge, resulting in a soundboard which delivers unmatched projection and resonance. Crafted from select European spruce and built to vibrate easily, the soundboard of the S3X is built to withstand stress and retain its shape, promising to deliver rich overtones, low decay, and a wide range of expressive tonal colors.

Hand-wound music wire

Hand-winding piano strings is an extremely demanding task that can only be performed by seasoned experts. As they wind pure copper around the core steel string, Yamaha craftsmen must delicately adjust the balance and tension of the strings. The resulting strings are pliable with overtones to match the fundamental frequencies, producing a beautifully resonant sound.

Newly developed bespoke SX Series hammers

Yamaha, unlike most other piano manufacturers, produces most of its own high-quality components, and the hammers used in the SX Series have been specially designed to compliment the body of the instrument. Yamaha's R&D technicians developed a new formula for the hammer felt, testing countless prototypes to find the perfect match with optimum elasticity and density.
